I think with my business I could easily send out newsletters weekly with new arrivals, seasonal specials, maybe even deals and such. However, I get annoyed when I an overabundance of newsletters, so I would opt for bi monthly at most, the only exception being major holidays to send out day of. It is difficult to find a happy medium- you want to remind the customer that you exist, but you also don't want to drive them away (I am very guilty of unsubscribing from a handful of brands I like simply because they sent too many emails).
I can see this fictitious business being very close to the community, so aside from the aforementioned content, I can also see customers being interested in some sort of horticulture program we sponsored or volunteering at a community garden. Because I gave my business a garden and pumpkins, maybe I could even host a pumpkin carving event. Newsletters can really have anything, as long as it's new and/or helpful to the customer.
I am usually very good at maintaining my inbox and regularly sift through emails, but only the important ones should be in the primary box; Likewise, advertisements should go into the promotions inbox, but that isnt always the case, and depending on the business I often find myself unsubscribing should they send enough newsletters to annoy me. Other than that, while I don't exactly enjoy going through all the ads, it's good to know which businesses are active and coming out with new products. I also keep track of any deals, even ones I missed should they do a rerun eventually, and any coupons I may have received for being a subscriber.
In short, if someone is subscribed to your mailing list then theyre already interested in or need your business, so newsletters should be something new to the customer.
I just love your community based ideas like the horticulture program and pumpkin carving event. They are perfect content for a newsletter and business savvy too!
ReplyDeleteThe pumpkin event sounds fabulous! I love this kind of event and it would be great to showcase in your newsletter too! You could do themed events for each holiday and get the community in the spirit!
