It's very difficult for an ad to catch my attention, considering the fact i'm already mindlessly scrolling through my instagram feed and barely processing the posts that aren't ads. However, there are actually some that do manage to peak my interest; this time of year is especially bad for my wallet, since i'm a horrible gift giver and ads can help in that regard.
I personally keep an eye out for clothing and gift ideas, and instagram seems to know that, as advertisements and algorithms have and continue to be increasingly personalized and catered to ones interests, wants and needs. In this sense the imagery used is either a hit or a miss; if the clothes or product doesn't look good, then I'm obviously not interested in buying it.
While I think the general consensus is that flashy and snappy videos are more attention grabbing, I would also say that ads you (have) to take the time to read leave a deeper impression on you. This is Instagram's biggest shortcoming, as all their videos, including their advertisements, automatically continue on to the next post; In comparison, tiktok videos and ads replay until the user manually scrolls onwards, meaning the advertisement has a much larger chance of becoming memorable versus getting lost and forgotten in instagrams algorithm.
Suffering even worse than instagram ads, I believe at least, are traditional advertisements; I can't say I speak for all of Gen-Z, but I can't think of anyone in my age group who regularly reads newspapers or magazines, let alone the advertisements on them. While I still do use the radio at times, if it skips to a commercial break there are several other stations I could easily flip to for more music, in which case the ads are lost on me; I actually pay for my music for how much I'm listening to it, so I don't get ads at all, and I think this is the case with most people nowadays too. Similarly, subscriptions to tv services are also the more popular option, though if there are commercials it is usually used as a bathroom or phone break.
As long as marketers continue to find ways to connect with more customers, those same customers are going to find ways to tune you out- it's just a matter of the right person at the right moment in some cases.
